Engagement of employees in the workplace

Low levels of employee engagement are costing the UK economy billions – £26bn each year, according to a study by employment solutions provider Kenexa. Finding creative strategies to motivate employees isn’t easy and employers want to keep their employees engaged.

The level of motivation and the daily commitment of employees seems set to fall gradually. Research by the London School of Business and Finance (LSBF) has revealed that nearly half (47 per cent) of the UK’s workers would like to change their current career. In this study of 1,000 professionals, around a quarter (23 per cent) said they regret choosing their current occupation.

A good strategy of employing engagement in the workplace is starting regular training opportunities, these can be initiatives that promote a balance between professional and private life and the construction of a direct and effective communication between management and the workforce.

Another strategy that employers can use is to embrace more tech in the workplace. The benefits and outcomes of investing in digital tools must be communicated to employees on a consistent basis, and rewards and recognition work well to increase engagement. When done right, the tools will improve productivity, morale, and overall engagement.

There are also some traditional, sensible measures that HR managers can use for engaging with staff and understanding that it’s not just salary that drives people. Managers need to keep employees committed and involved in business projects. The lack of engagement can cause serious damage to companies, which can lead to suffering losses amounting to more than it costs to pay an employee in a year.

Here are some tips to increase employee motivation and win back workers who may have already "checked out" back on track:

  1. Create a positive working environment. Workplace culture and conditions are among the biggest factors in improving employee satisfaction. Employees need to feel comfortable and free to express themselves.
  2. Give employees opportunities to grow. There should be a clear path by which employees can climb the ranks to greater responsibility and pay rises. One way to show employees that you want them to grow professionally is to have one-on-one conversations about personal and professional goals.
  3. Eliminate stress. Impossible deadlines or excessive workloads will erode job satisfaction for even the most dedicated team members.  Strive to create a stress-free environment by setting realistic deadlines
  4. Invest in software tools. Offering employees opportunities to use the latest software tools that enable them to work and perform better and reduce time spent on tasks. Computers and technology allow for faster processing of data and easier retrieval of information. This encourages leadership and is an easy way to give employees extra boost and make them excited about their current roles.
  5. Show appreciation.  Employees work harder and care more about their jobs when their efforts are noticed and rewarded. Appreciation doesn't have to be elaborate or expensive. Sometimes a simple change to the person's job description will make an impact. You can also consider giving that employee more responsibility or a long-overdue promotion. 

Engaging and motivating your employees should be among your top priorities as a company because it helps ensure your employees are invested in their work - not just going through the motions and checking off tasks. Take a look at the tips above and implement these with the help of your HR department. You must focus on building relationships, recognise signs of stress in your employees and work to help them grow and show appreciation to enhance the engagement in your workplace.
