HR Tech World Spotlight: Shop Direct

March 17, 2017 Tom Kirby

HR Tech World is coming up again on 21 and 22 March at ExCel London, bringing a great opportunity to hear from the UK’s HR leaders and suppliers on their stories. One such story is that of Cornerstone client, Shop Direct.

Shop Direct is the UK's second largest pureplay digital retailer. With 4,500 employees, the company offers the best range of famous brands through its digital department stores such as,, and

It’s main goal? To become a world class digital retailer – and it’s already on track.

Moving talent management to the cloud

Before implementing Cornerstone, Shop Direct managed its talent management manually. It lacked visibility of its employees across its global offices in the UK, Ireland, Hong Kong, China, Thailand, India and Bangladesh, and needed a single system to track employee performance and manage objectives.

To achieve its goals, Shop Direct shifted to a digital-first approach to talent management, so it could attract, develop and retain the best talent – and Cornerstone was chosen.

The success so far

Since implementation, Shop Direct has benefited from a number of advantages:

  • Recruitment: Shop Direct now offers candidates, both internal and external, a smoother recruitment process.
  • Learning and Development: Shop Direct’s learning and development offering has been transformed to cater to its people, who have a very diverse range of skill sets and levels, working in very different environments.
  • Engagement and performance: Workforce engagement has been a key improvement too. The company’s people engagement is measured through an annual engagement survey, called “Your Shout”, and over the last few years, engagement scores have grown significantly.
  • Improved Compliance: the financial services side, Shop Direct is highly regulated and compliance for all colleagues on a number of topics is essential – Cornerstone has simplified this.

Attending HR Tech World this year? Do join Shop Direct’s session on 21 March from 14:55-15:15 in room 13, level hear more about its results from Sue Mace, Head of Talent Development, Shop Direct. And of course, drop by the Cornerstone stand 402.
