Innovative learning concepts - TED Talk instead trash talk

Have you ever wondered what sound a fox makes? Does it bark? Does it howl? The Norwegian comedy duo Ylvis have devoted themselves to this issue at great length with a song titled "What does the Fox say?" written, of course, with a video and befitting fox costumes. Nearly 560 million people have this question, judging by the video views. Whether foxes bark, meow or whinny now – you still don’t know at the end, but at least you enjoyed four minutes of fulfilling entertainment.

Sounds pretty exciting, the kind reader thinks. But what has this got to do with learning?

The Generation Y(outube)

The "moral of the story" here is with the affinity of the video for ‘Generation Y(outube)’, which turns out to be a useful building block for new learning approaches. In times of digitisation and Industry 4.0, users eventually need to be found, where they feel at home – with attractive content for smartphones, tablets and so on. The easiest way is with video content. Videos are a useful modern medium as they are easy to use. In addition, everyone is accustomed to watching videos online, no matter whether you’re investigating the question "What does the Fox say?" or, like 2.4 billion users worldwide, searching for Gangnam-Style dances. Interactive e-learning formats such as videos are becoming increasingly important, the individual modules more interesting, and less mobile available. E-learning transfers the strengths of digitalisation to workplace learning: transparency, networking, collaboration, measurability, flexibility and interaction. Technologies such as cloud also enable an ever easier access to learning content and deliver a response to the growing demand for mobile content.

My new friend TED

TED Talks (TED stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design) are building on the consumption habits of users. To those wondering: no, they have nothing to do with vulgar Hollywood bear Ted and his friend Mark Wahlberg. TED Talks are a successful format from the United States, with 18-minute (maximum) video lectures dealing with innovative ideas and concepts from the ‘art of baking bread" to ‘the voices in my head‘. Browse TED today and you’ll find over 1,000 video lectures. The basic idea: to spread innovative ideas and network creative people together. Companies can use the TED Talks method to further enhance digital learning strategies and to offer new ways of thinking to their employees.

One of the most frequently clicked videos with 11.4 million clicks is the lecture: "My philosophy for a happy life" from Sam Berns in 2013. The 17-year-old American suffers from progeria, the so-called old disease in which a mutation leads to a deformation of the nucleus. The people affected by the hereditary disease are very small, thin, bald and have wrinkled skin – they rarely live older than 14 years. Sam Berns, with his 17 years already, is a small miracle and despite his illness leads a happy life. He believes in being able to change the world and uses his illness to encourage other people. Sam Berns has inspired people around the world with his work – people like him form the essence of TED Talks. The aim is to identify new ways of thinking outside pre-engrained paths to provide motivation and promote personal development.

In a similarly successful contribution, social psychologist and Harvard professor Amy Cuddy addresses body language and its significance for our appearance and identity. She says our body language not only has strong influence on how others see us, but also on how we evaluate ourselves. As a recipe for a positive body language, Amy presents various "power poses" that promote the release of certain hormones in the body that can increase, for example, the concentration and chances of success before an important client presentation.

TED Talks help on one hand by inspiring employees for learning, and give the other hand to helping new management regarding objectives, negotiation and cooperation. Certainly there are some hurdles to overcome: for example, the relevant TED Talks for the respective learning thrust filter out. Not an easy task given the fact that 50 new "Talks" appear solely on YouTube almost daily.
